Hair Myths, TikTok Tricks & Dangerous Mistakes You Should Avoid
By Leonardo Rocco
Between salon chairs and social media trends, I’ve seen it all. But some of the most common mistakes people make with their hair are based on myths or viral content with no real science behind them. Here’s what to avoid—and what to do instead.
1. The TikTok Trap: Dangerous “Hacks” That Damage Hair
From crushed aspirin as scalp exfoliant to using aluminum foil with a flat iron—many “beauty hacks” circulating on TikTok and Instagram can cause irreversible damage. Hair is not a science experiment. Always consult a professional before trying anything new.
2. The Coconut Oil Dilemma
Yes, coconut oil hydrates and controls frizz—but it’s not for everyone. On low-porosity or fine hair, it can cause buildup and heaviness. Always test a small amount first and adjust based on how your hair responds.
3. The Conditioner Myth
Skipping conditioner because you have oily hair? Big mistake. Conditioner seals the cuticle and prevents breakage. Just use the right one for your hair type—lightweight for fine or oily hair, richer for dry or curly hair.
4. The Collagen Question
Do you need collagen? Not necessarily. But as we age, collagen production slows down, and supplements may support hair strength and structure. It’s no miracle cure, but it can be a valuable addition—consult your doctor first.
5. Freezing Water & Ice Cubes
Cold water helps seal the cuticle for smoother, shinier hair—but there’s no need to go extreme. Ice water or direct ice application can irritate the scalp. A cool rinse at the end of your shower is more than enough.
