Types of Curls and Their Care
Ladies, one of my favorite hair types is curly hair. It is unique and beautiful, but it can also be challenging to keep healthy and manageable. While many people think curly hair is less versatile, I believe the opposite. With its texture, you can play and modify it in many ways, as long as the stylist knows how to handle curls. That's why there are salons and stylists who specialize in curly hair. People with curly or coily hair know what they want and how to manage it. They look for specific products for curls and are very particular about what they use.
The haircut is just as important as the care you give it because, due to its curly nature, the shape of the hair makes it more prone to dehydration, damage, and frizz. In this article, I present vital information about curls and coils.
Waves (Type 2)
2A: Loose and fine waves.
2B: More defined waves with a bit of frizz.
2C: Thick and defined waves with a tendency to frizz.
Styling: Use a texturizing spray to define waves without weighing them down. Avoid brushes and opt for a wide-tooth comb.
Curls (Type 3)
3A: Large and loose curls.
3B: Tighter and voluminous curls.
3C: Dense and very defined curls.
Styling: Use curl defining creams and diffusers. Apply the product when the hair is wet and let it air dry or use a diffuser to avoid frizz.
Tight Curls (Type 4)
4A: Small and defined curls.
4B: Zigzag-shaped curls with less definition.
4C: Very tight curls with the least definition and the most frizz.
Styling: Apply dense gels and creams to maintain definition. The "shingling" technique (applying product by separating curls with fingers) is ideal for this type of curls.
Washing Frequency for Curly Hair
Curly hair does not need to be washed as frequently as straight hair. I recommend washing curly hair every 3-4 days to maintain its natural moisture. Between washes, you can refresh your curls with a hydrating spray or leave-in conditioner. During the night, try to lift your hair off the pillow to prevent friction-induced frizz; satin or silk pillowcases are great for minimizing frizz.
Additional Tips
Control: Always use a control gel that is gentle and contains moisturizers, with low or no alcohol content to avoid a crunchy feel. Avoid mousse as it often contains too much alcohol and can dry out your hair.
Air Drying: Whenever possible, let your hair air dry to avoid frizz.
Diffuser: If using a blow dryer, use a diffuser to evenly distribute heat and avoid damaging your curls. Use high heat with medium or low speed; too much power can disrupt curl formation.
Hands Off: Avoid touching your hair once styled to maintain definition and prevent frizz.
Never Brush: Do not brush curly hair once it’s dry; instead, gently arrange it with dry hands.
With these tips and products, your curly hair will look healthy, defined, and beautiful. Remember that each curl type is unique, and the most important thing is to find a routine that works for you. Use specialized products for curls to receive the proper nutrition and care. Embrace your curls and look spectacular!
